How to make Your Workplace Fire Drill a Success..

SERVPRO of Tracy says most people see the workplace as a safe environment where they build careers and make money. However, you run the risk of getting caught up in a fire every time you walk into the office building. Whether it is an electrical fault or terrorist act, you will need a solid escape plan to get out safely.

Here are the top 3 tips that will make your workplace fire drill a success:

1. Set a strict interval
2. Don't announce mock evacuations
3. Add the element of surprise

Set an Interval and Stick to It.

Too many people see fire drills as interruptions to the workflow, but you shouldn't. Always include the evacuation exercise in the company's to-do list and don't let anything else get in the way.
Still, you have to get the timing right. For example, bi-weekly drills might be extreme, and annual intervals are not reasonable either. The sweet spot is anywhere between 3 to 4 months.

Don't Announce Simulated Evacuations.

There is a high chance people will not take publicized emergency evacuations seriously, and they will not work as you hoped. People will exit the building as they usually would, walking past any "blocked exits" on their way out. So, it is better to scare them every time.

Add the Element of Surprise.

Emergencies are often unpredictable. There could be a fire behind a door, forcing victims to find an alternative route. Therefore, it is important to make sure everybody knows at least 2 exit points on every floor in case of a real disaster. To practice this, you will need to assign people to random exits holding a sign that's written, "Exit blocked, find another way out." Also, don't forget to include visitors in your plan. An escape plan is as good as how often it is practiced. Commercial Fire Deodorization

SERVPRO of Tracy were called to this large commercial fire damage we produced as a result of an electrical malfunction. SERVPRO of Tracy  had a first responder on site quickly to expedite cleaning, demolition, and deodorization scope and planning.

As this was located at a gymnasium, the vast majority of space was warehouse, with built-in tiered offices and party rooms. Total affected space in the building was 15,500 square feet, which made for an enormous amount of volume to conduct final deodorization.

After weeks of demolition and specialized cleaning, we conducted thermal fogging for the final deodorization. Our two technicians donned their proper PPE (Personal Protective Equipment), and fogged the entire cubic area of the gym.

The manager was very happy to see everything was back to normal.

Warehouse Water Damage

As a water restoration company, SERVPRO of Tracy, what we did and we continue to do so.

We did a walkthrough and found the point of origin. We used a moisture detector to detect all the moisture in the building and found where the building did not have water damage. Knowing that this was CAT 3 water we knew that we were going to have to remove porous contents and see what was restorable and what was not restorable.

There were plenty of porous materials that were restorable. Most notably were the books. There were hundreds if not thousands of books that received water damage from the flood.

Luckily, we have the perfect tool for that. We use a freeze dryer that uses sublimation to dry paper. Carpet had to be torn out. Dry wall was soaked. We removed these porous materials and restored all the restorable materials.

During early 1978 EPA (Environment protection agency) required most industries to stop the use of lead paint because of the hazards it caused. And being that this paint had been used on surfaces built before 1978, we as a SERVPRO of Tracy are required to test surfaces before that time period to clarify if the surface has lead in it. Here are some tips on what you can do to protect your family from lead in Pre-1978 property. 

• Keep young kids from chewing any parts of the wall as it could be poisonous.
• Any pieces of paint or drywall that becomes detached to the wall, clean and remove it immediately.
• Remove any shoes before entering the property as it could bring in more lead.
• Wash children's toys, hands and bottles frequently.
