Happy Labor Day from SERVPRO of Tracy Team..!!

Happy Labor Day from SERVPRO of Tracy Team!!!

Labor Day was born after many men and women fought hard for fair wages and reasonable work hours. It was not uncommon in the 1800s for a man to work 12 hour days, 7 days a week and still barely keep a roof over his head or food on the table.

  • We celebrate those Americans that worked so hard and fought so hard for us to be able to live the way we do today. Thank you!
  • When our technicians are called out in the middle of the night on a Saturday night, to a commercial building involving a major loss, they understand how important it is for those essential workers to get back to their jobs as quickly as possible.
  • Our SERVPRO of Tracy staff understands the faster we work, the faster someone else can get back to work to serve others. We are your frontlines. We understand hard work and we pride ourselves on the quality of work we do.

Happy Labor Day! Please remember to thank and appreciate all of our essential workers in our community. They keep us safe, they keep us healthy, they keep us fed. We are so lucky to live in this great country with truly caring people.

Please take care of yourself and family members. Enjoy your Labor Day weekend from your friendly neighborhood SERVPRO of Tracy.

We can be reached 24 hours a day, 365 days a year at 209-834-0200. Disasters don’t take a day off and neither do we...

How To Clean a Moldy Washing Machine...

4/16/2021 (Permalink)

Any washing machine can begin to develop mold..

Tips To Keep Mildew Out Of Your Washer...

SERVPRO of Tracy says any washing machine can begin to develop mold. Front-load washers are known for being gentler on clothes and getting clothes cleaner than traditional top-load washers. However, front-load washers are notorious for developing an unpleasant, sour-scented smell. This foul odor is due to mold  and mildew inside the tiny cracks and crevices of your washer. Luckily, you do not have to be stuck with a stinky laundry room that smells like dirty laundry. There are several simple methods you can use to keep mildew out of your washer.

1. Clean the Drum
Mix together 1/4 cup baking soda and 1/4 cup water. Pour the mixture into the detergent container and pour two cups of vinegar into the main part of the washer. Run a full cycle on hot. As the baking soda and vinegar mix together, the chemical reaction should kill any mold growing inside your washing machine.

2. Scrub if Needed
If you still see or smell anything suspicious, mix together equal parts of vinegar and water. Dip an abrasive sponge into the mixture and scrub away the remaining grime.

3. Clean the Gasket
The rubber seal around the door is a common area for mold and mildew to develop. Clean the gasket thoroughly with an equal solution of water and vinegar by rubbing a rag around the interior seal.

4. Prevent a Recurrence
Since regular soap can leave behind too much residue, use a detergent that is made for HE machines. To encourage complete drying between cycles, remove your laundry promptly and leave the door open when the machine is not in use. By following the previous recommendations once a month, you can keep your machine from developing a mold smell.

If the steps to clean your washing machine do not work, or you notice a moldy smell coming from other areas in your laundry room, you may need to call a professional mold remediation company like SERVPRO of Tracy. With a little help from the experts, your home will soon be back to its pre-mold condition.

Using Advanced Cleaning Methods, SERVPRO of Tracy Can Fully Restore Fire Loss Items Even in Your Kitchen and Much More...

When fire occurs, you may be  surprised how fast it consumes various parts of your home.  Although firefighting efforts and good fortune can help put out the fire before it brings down the structure, you are left with a considerable renovation challenge.

When SERVPRO of Tracy handles a fire loss cleanup in local properties, the technicians arrive intending to save the owner from replacing as much of the structure and contents as possible. This intention gets accomplished through the use of our advanced cleaning agents and methods.

Cleaning Tips from SERVPRO of Tracy

9/2/2020 (Permalink)

When changing batteries in your smoke alarms is too important of a thing to remember to put on a list with anything else.

So what about everything else?

Here are few tips from the SERVPRO of Tracy's cleaning team:

  1. Wipe down your walls and ceilings: vacuum from top to bottom and remove dust.  If your walls are dirty (parents!) a mild detergent can bring new life.  SERVPRO Wall’ n All is our House Favorite and if you call us, we’ll bring you some. We can even clean the walls for you.  A mild detergent will add a subtle spring fresh scent to the room.
  2. Vacuum and Shampoo rugs: 80% of what is coming out of your rugs is coming out from vacuuming.  We can help with the steam cleaning.  If you want to do it yourself, make sure you know what type of carpet you have and that it won’t be damaged by the process.   Call us either way if you have any concerns.
  3. Change your Power Strips.  If they are older than the equipment plugged into them or if you can’t remember when you bought them, get new ones.  This is a big deal in fire prevention.
  4. Inspect your Ducts: If your ducts haven’t been cleaned in a few years, or if you have pets, unscrew a duct, stick your phone in and take a picture or two.  If you don’t like what you see, Call Us.  We’ll schedule a duct cleaning.

If you do these few things, your home will feel as fresh as the Great Outdoors.  We’re here to help. Any questions call SERVPRO of Tracy 209-834-0200

Basic Facts about Mold and Dampness

4/20/2020 (Permalink)

mold

Have a Mold Problem? Call SERVPRO of TRACY at 209.834.0200

Basic Facts about Mold and Dampness

How common is mold in buildings?

Molds are very common in buildings and homes. Mold will grow in places with a lot of moisture, such as around leaks in roofs, windows, or pipes, or where there has been flooding. Mold grows well on paper products, cardboard, ceiling tiles, and wood products. Mold can also grow in dust, paints, wallpaper, insulation, drywall, carpet, fabric, and upholstery.

The most common indoor molds are CladosporiumPenicillium, and Aspergillus.  We do not have precise information about how often different molds are found in buildings and homes.

How do molds get in the indoor environment and how do they grow?

Mold is found both indoors and outdoors. Mold can enter your home through open doorways, windows, vents, and heating and air conditioning systems. Mold in the air outside can also attach itself to clothing, shoes, and pets can and be carried indoors. When mold spores drop on places where there is excessive moisture, such as where leakage may have occurred in roofs, pipes, walls, plant pots, or where there has been flooding, they will grow. Many building materials provide suitable nutrients that encourage mold to grow. Wet cellulose materials, including paper and paper products, cardboard, ceiling tiles, wood, and wood products, are particularly conducive for the growth of some molds. Other materials such as dust, paints, wallpaper, insulation materials, drywall, carpet, fabric, and upholstery, commonly support mold growth.

How do you know if you have a mold problem?

Large mold infestations can usually be seen or smelled.

How do you keep mold out of buildings and homes?

Inspect buildings for evidence of water damage and visible mold as part of routine building maintenance, Correct conditions causing mold growth (e.g., water leaks, condensation, infiltration, or flooding) to prevent mold growth.

Inside your home you can control mold growth by:

  • Controlling humidity levels;
  • Promptly fixing leaky roofs, windows, and pipes;
  • Thoroughly cleaning and drying after flooding;
  • Ventilating shower, laundry, and cooking areas.

Specific Recommendations:

  • Keep humidity levels as low as you can—between 30% and 50%–all day long. An air conditioner or dehumidifier will help you keep the level low. Bear in mind that humidity levels change over the course of a day with changes in the moisture in the air and the air temperature, so you will need to check the humidity levels more than once a day.
  • Use an air conditioner or a dehumidifier during humid months.
  • Be sure your home has enough ventilation. Use exhaust fans which vent outside your home in the kitchen and bathroom. Make sure your clothes dryer vents outside your home.
  • Fix any leaks in your home’s roof, walls, or plumbing so mold does not have moisture to grow.
  • Consider not using carpet in rooms or areas like bathrooms or basements that may have a lot of moisture.

How do you get the molds out of buildings, including homes, schools, and places of employment?

Mold growing in homes and buildings indicates that there is a problem with water or moisture. This is the first problem to address.

Remove moldy items from living areas.  Once mold starts to grow in carpet, insulation, ceiling tiles, drywall, or wallboard, the only way to deal with the problem is by removal and replacement.

It is important to properly clean and dry the area as you can still have an allergic reaction to parts of the dead mold and mold contamination may recur if there is still a source of moisture.

Remove or replace carpets and upholstery that have been soaked and cannot be dried promptly.

Clean up and dry out your home thoroughly and quickly (within 24-48 hours) after any flooding.  Dig out mud and dirt .  Use a wet vacuum to remove remaining dirt. Scrub cleanable surfaces (such as wood, tile, stone) with soapy water and a bristle brush.  Thoroughly clean all hard surfaces (such as flooring, molding, wood and metal furniture, countertops, and sinks) with water and dish detergent. Dry surfaces quickly and thoroughly after cleaning. If you have a fan, air conditioner or dehumidifier that wasn’t affected by flooding use it to help the surfaces dry after you finish cleaning

Mold growth can be removed from hard surfaces with commercial products, soap and water, or a bleach solution of no more than 1 cup (8 ounces) of bleach in 1 gallon of water to kill mold on surfaces. Never mix bleach with ammonia or other household cleaners.

If you choose to use bleach to clean up mold:

  • Never mix bleach with ammonia or other household cleaners. Mixing bleach with ammonia or other cleaning products will produce dangerous, toxic fumes.
  • Open windows and doors to provide fresh air.
  • Wear non-porous gloves and protective eye wear.
  • Small areas (such as a shower, or an area the size of a door) can often be cleaned by residents, but larger areas might need more professional help.  Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions when using bleach or any other cleaning product.

If you have an extensive amount of mold and you do not think you can manage the cleanup on your own, you may want to contact a professional who has experience in cleaning mold in buildings and homes.

Cigarette smoking inside the Home is harmful

9/3/2019 (Permalink)

Smoking indoors can potentially lead to fire damages as depicted above.

We, at SERVPRO of Tracy has Tips for:

For regular cigarette users, smoking inside of your home may be a common occurance. Unfortunately, this practice leads to thousands of home fire incidents each year. Mistakenly starting a cigarette fire may be easier that you think. See if you are following these basic practices to prevent a fire in your home:

Smoking Outdoors:

As obvious as it may seem, choosing to smoke outdoors when possible can greatly reduce your likelihood of starting a fire in your home. Smoking outside cuts back the risk of igniting household items. These are some of the most commonplace objects sparked by cigarettes:

  1. Furniture upholstery
  2. Bedding
  3. Trash

As a rule, never smoke indoors where medical oxygen is in use. While medical oxygen itself is not flammable, the high supply of oxygen can quickly fuel a fire if one begins.

Using Proper Ashtrays:

To prevent a cigarette fire, fully extinguish your cigarette before disposing of it in a proper ashtray. Look for a tray that is wide and deep enough to safely contain cigarette butts. Always place your ashtray on a solid, non-flammable surface. It is a good practice to keep ashtrays outdoors and away from your residence. Never place an ashtray near these or other easily ignitable objects:

  1. Drapes and upholstery
  2. House plants
  3. Books or magazines

If smoking has occurred in your home, always check the area for loose cigarette butts. Look between couch cushions or under chairs for stray cigarette butts that may have fallen out of view. Be sure they are fully extinguished and properly disposed of. Following these simple guidelines may prevent an ashtray fire in your home.

Cleaning Up Indoor Smoke Odors:

Whether a cigarette fire has occurred in your residence or business, and you want help with fire cleanup, or you are seeking aid for the removal of indoor smoke odors. Call SERVPRO of Tracy 209-834-0200. A restoration crew have the tools and training to penetrate lasting smoke smells and restore your home to a clean and odor-free; "Like it never even happened...."

Commercial Damage on a Monday Morning?

Mold Specialist at SERVPRO of Tracy

8/16/2017 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Tracy vans are equipped with all the necessary products and equipment to tackle your mold problems.

Mold can occur anywhere in a home but mainly is concentrated to areas where moisture is present. These moisture areas are common to the bathroom and basements. Mold can cause respiratory problems and should be removed if found as soon as possible. Most restoration companies only do mold inspections if the mold is visible, an industrial hygienist would come in and search for traces of mold that are not visible.

One of the first places mold can collect and you may not think to check is under the refrigerator. Under the fridge tends to collect moisture and dirt which can cause a breeding ground for bacteria and mold.

Another place is the AC unit. AC units are known to collect debris, dust and moisture from the air, which can lead to mold spores.

Mold can even grow in or around a washing machine or its parts. Moisture and lint can cause a presence of mold spores.

Other area in the house include anywhere moisture and dirt may form such as window corners.

Sewage/Mold Cleanup in Tracy

8/14/2017 (Permalink)

Property manager asked SERVPRO of Tracy to provide Mold Damage estimate in garage caused by sewage water over flowed in upstairs bathroom toilet. Affected water came into garage through ceiling and walls.

This was old water damage ignored by previous tenants. We provided written estimate to property manager to get approval from their landlord.

Landlord then called his insurance company to cover this claim and it is approved. Landlord involved Industrial Hygienist to check the air quality after the cleanup.

SERVPRO of Tracy waited for a while to get our estimate to be approved. We have to work with tenants to get the job started. Tenant was very nice person and made our work easy with his cooperation.

SERVPRO of Tracy finally did all their sewage/mold cleanup the professional SERVPRO way.

If you have any kind of mold problems. Call SERVPRO of Tracy on 209-834-0200

  • Here at SERVPRO of Tracy, we would like to give you some tips on "How to prevent Mold."
  • Mold is a common household problem, developing in warm, damp environments. Mold can be colored green, purple, white and orange. While mold plays an important role outside in the environment, breaking down dead plants, mold is unwelcome in homes.
  • Showers and bathrooms are a common location for mold to grow, but it is possible for mold to grow anywhere in a home.
  • Mold can come inside a home from an outside growth through inadequately sealed windows or doors. Mold spores cannot be eliminated entirely, but they will not grow if the environment is dry and well ventilated.
  • Mold growth can be prevented by ensuring if water damage occurs, clean up occurs quickly. Using air conditioners during humid seasons and exhaust fans in kitchen can prevent mold from growing.
  • Other area to monitor moisture to prevent mold growth:
  • Exterior walls and surfaces in need of insulation where condensation can build, air conditioner drip pans, check for leaks around refrigerator, ensure crawl spaces are well ventilated and check for leaks around a tub.
  • These are a few simple tips for making sure mold is not growing in your home.

Does Your Home Have A Mold Problem?

8/17/2016 (Permalink)

Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:

  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  • Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
  • Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
  • Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

If your home or business has a mold problem, we can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation.
